Absolute Citrin

Our Resilient Mindfulness session last Friday focused on Managing Negative Emotions.
During the meditation, I shared a 3 part formula for addressing that pesky negativity which includes (1) recognizing and naming the feeling, (2) allowing the feeling to be there without judgement or criticism and observe what happens during that time of acceptance and (3) sharing an appreciation with yourself for not getting hooked into or having the emotion control you.
When we debriefed from the experience, one participant shared that she had a meeting with her coach a couple of days before our program where her coach gave her an assignment that she did not want to complete. She ruminated about it, continued to fight the assignment in her head, and actually had trouble sleeping because she woke up and was thinking about this task.
As she meditated on accepting the negative emotion, she found that her thoughts about the assignment changed and that she could modify it so it became more acceptable to her and she was even able to see important benefit she could derive from completing it.
One of the biggest challenges of dealing with negative emotions is that they hook us in and start to control us. This participant found a way to transform something that was unpleasant for her into something that would help her transform.
What a nice way to start the day!
